54-year-old Jaromir Jagr makes an emotional announcement after 38 pro seasons

Jaromir Jagr has been through enough hockey seasons that fans have learned never to count him out.

But this preseason feels different.

The 54-year-old, who owns and skates for Rytiri Kladno in the Czech Extraliga, has sat out training camp entirely and has not appeared in any of the team's three preseason games.

It's a stark reversal from a year ago, when Jagr was on the ice for camp and playing games at age 53.

Jagr is still listed on Kladno's official roster, though without a bio photo, which has only added to the speculation swirling around Czech hockey circles this month.

His last competitive game came back on December 21, 2025, a 4-1 loss at Bili Tygri Liberec, where he logged just under eight minutes of ice time and took a minor penalty.

He finished that campaign with a single assist in six games, a far cry from the production he's provided in seasons past.

Across 38 professional seasons spanning the NHL, the Czech and Czechoslovak leagues and the KHL, Jagr has piled up an almost unthinkable 2,397 regular season points on 961 goals and 1,436 assists.

He's never made retirement official, and anyone who has followed his career this long knows he tends to keep his plans close to the vest until the very last minute.

Jagr himself hinted back in February that this moment was coming, saying it would take something close to divine intervention for fans to ever see him play again.

Whether this truly marks the end or just another dramatic pause in one of hockey's longest and most remarkable careers, Kladno and its fans are bracing for the very real possibility that number 68 has skated his last competitive shift.
