Yesterday, 16 players were placed on waivers by many NHL teams as they look to cut down their rosters before the regular season begins, with every single one of those players going unclaimed, and on Saturday there's even more. According to reports, 23 players from eight teams (Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, Utah Hockey Club, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders and Seattle Kraken) have been placed on waivers, making it 39 total players placed on waivers in the last 48 hours.
Unsurprisingly, none of those players are notable names that have extensive NHL history or guaranteed futures ahead, and it's likely that these teams used the waiver option early as a way to avoid those players being claimed.
With most rosters still needing to be cut by at least 10 or more players, this won't be the last mass waiver transaction day we see, and given the caliber of player, it's likely to continue in this fashion until all teams narrow down their rosters.
The regular season is set to begin on October 4th when the Devils take on the Buffalo Sabres, giving many teams around two weeks or less to get their rosters compliant, and while there's likely to not be many names claimed or many notable names placed on waivers, we could see a surprise or two in the coming days.
