Vegas Golden Knights forward Braeden Bowman was assessed a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct Monday night after a hit that left Boston Bruins forward Matthew Poitras bleeding profusely at TD Garden.

Poitras was carrying the puck up the right wing boards in front of the benches when Bowman went to finish his check.
Bowman was ruled to have landed with his elbow in Poitras's face, and blood poured from the young forward's nose.
Play was halted as Poitras skated down the tunnel toward the Bruins dressing room for repairs.

Poitras Returns With a Face Shield

Poitras did not stay out long. He soon reappeared on the Bruins bench with gauze in his nose and a full face shield, and he looked to be in good spirits. His quick return was a positive sign for Boston.
The Bruins held a 2-0 lead when the penalty was called, and Bowman's night was done.
Tempers were already running high. Earlier, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was given an interference minor for a hit on Vegas rookie Trevor Connelly, and Bowman was among the Golden Knights who pinned McAvoy against the glass. The ejection was the first of Bowman's NHL career.

Could Bowman Face a Suspension?

A major and game misconduct for elbowing can draw a second look from the NHL Department of Player Safety, which monitors every game and can issue a fine or a suspension. Blood, contact to the face and the force of the elbow are all likely to be part of that review.
Any suspension of five games or fewer is handled through a phone hearing, while a punishment of six games or more brings an in-person hearing option. No discipline had been announced at the time of publication.
Bowman, who signed a six-year contract extension with Vegas in September, now waits to see how the league views the hit.
Poitras, a 2022 second-round pick, will be watched closely for any update on his condition after the game.
