New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier was representing Switzerland at the World Championships today when he sustained an injury. Luckily he returned to the ice, but he was wearing a different number!

Team Switzerland was playing the hosts, team Czechia today at the World Championships of Hockey. It was a highly contested game that ended up being decided in a shootout. During the game though, fans of the New Jersey Devils got a scare as Nico Hischier was involved in a heavily collision as he attempted to drive towards the net.

Nico Hischier will need some repairs after this collision.

A little bit of blood, but he was lucky he didn't get a skate blade to the face. #MensWorlds

One of the Czech players had their skate come dangerously close to the Devils' captain's face and neck, but luckily he only sustained a minor cut. However, this did mean that he had to leave the game. Under IIHF rules, players are not allowed on the ice with blood on their jersey. Apparently, the team didn't have any backups with the number 13 on it, so he returned wearing number 49 instead. He did participate in the rest of the game, but did not take an attempt during the shootout. Luckily for Switzerland, he was not required as the team secured the skills competition, giving them the 2-1 victory.

Nico Hischier got cut in the face, returned in a different jersey (original had blood) & did not participate in the shootout.

Seems to have avoided a worst case, though. Smiling after a big win for Switzerland.
