Connor Hellebuyck's trade saga is far from over, and a new name just entered the mix.
Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli pointed to the San Jose Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights as teams worth watching in the pursuit of the Winnipeg Jets' star goaltender, while also referencing the Utah Mammoth by their new franchise name.
Speaking on Oilers Now, Seravalli said:
I'm still really curious about San Jose, the Mammoth, I think you have to keep on eye open on the Golden Knights even though it's hard to squint and see a path.
Why San Jose and Vegas make sense
The Sharks have been rebuilding for several seasons and could use a proven, championship-caliber goaltender to anchor their crease as young talent develops.
Vegas, on the other hand, is a perennial contender that has never shied away from aggressive moves to bolster its roster for another Stanley Cup run.
Seravalli's hesitation about Vegas, calling the path hard to squint and see, suggests cap complications or asset scarcity could complicate any potential deal.
Hellebuyck publicly requested a trade from Winnipeg in August, citing what he believes is the best path forward for himself and his family.
The three-time Vezina Trophy winner and reigning Hart Trophy recipient carries a full no-movement clause, meaning he has final say on any destination.
Jets face a shrinking market
Carolina has already made a substantial offer, reportedly including a first round pick and a young defenseman, but nothing has been finalized.
With Florida out of the running after acquiring Jakob Markstrom, the list of suitors who can afford Hellebuyck's contract and meet Winnipeg's asking price continues to narrow as training camp approaches.
