15 players hit NHL waivers as Red Wings headline with six cuts

Ethan Bear headlines a busy Tuesday on the waiver wire as teams across the league trim their rosters ahead of opening night, according to PuckPedia.

Fifteen players hit waivers on September 22, and everyone placed on waivers the day before cleared without a claim, a sign general managers are being patient early in the process.

The Detroit Red Wings dominated the list, waiving six players in one shot: Jacob Bryson, Cameron Butler, Sheldon Dries, William Lagesson, John Leonard and Dominik Shine.

That kind of volume usually signals a franchise still sorting through a crowded training camp roster rather than any single player falling out of favor with the coaching staff.

The Rangers were nearly as active, waiving four players in Dennis Cholowski, Justin Dowling, Juuso Parssinen and Urho Vaakanainen.

The Islanders waived Ethan Bear and Henrik Tikkanen, the Stars moved on from Brandon Halverson, the Predators waived Jake Lucchini and the Capitals placed Ludwig Persson on the list.

Two names on the list carry Edmonton ties worth tracking.

Bear was drafted by the Oilers in the fifth round back in 2015 and spent parts of four seasons there before stops in Carolina, Vancouver and Washington got him to New York.

Lagesson was Edmonton's fourth round pick in 2014 and played the first several years of his NHL career with the Oilers before bouncing through Montreal, Toronto, Anaheim and Detroit.

More names are expected to join the wire in the coming days as clubs race to set their opening night rosters, with PuckPedia's waiver watch list already flagging several other players who could be next.
