Connor Hellebuyck and his family faced disturbing threats after the Olympics, and Kevin Cheveldayoff says police got involved.
The Winnipeg Jets suspended Connor Hellebuyck Wednesday night after he failed to report to training camp, the latest twist in a trade saga that started when he publicly requested a move on August 27.
General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff addressed the situation at a press conference Thursday morning, and one thing he shared went far beyond hockey.
Cheveldayoff revealed that the Jets security team, and at times local police, had to get involved after Hellebuyck and his family were targeted with threats and ugly online vitriol.
That abuse reportedly ramped up after Hellebuyck backstopped Team USA to Olympic gold in Milan Cortina, stopping 41 shots in a 2-1 win over Canada in the final.
That result did not sit well with everyone north of the border, and it seems some fans took their frustration out on Hellebuyck's family instead of just the scoreboard.
What Cheveldayoff actually said
Winnipeg Free Press reporter Mike McIntyre shared the GM's comments directly from the podium.
Cheveldayoff stopped short of tying the threats directly to Hellebuyck's decision to request a trade, saying he couldn't speak to how much of a role, if any, it has played.
Still, the timing is hard to ignore for a situation that has now dragged all the way into training camp with no resolution in sight.
Where the Jets go from here
Winnipeg has already lined up insurance in net, signing Stuart Skinner back on July 1, and reportedly held trade talks with Buffalo while Utah, Carolina and New Jersey have also shown interest.
Hellebuyck is a three time Vezina winner and the reigning Hart Trophy winner, so Winnipeg isn't about to give him away for nothing.
For now the suspension buys time, but it doesn't solve the bigger question of what comes next in one of the most uncomfortable storylines of the entire offseason.
