Dustin Byfuglien is still Dustin Byfuglien, even five years removed from his last NHL shift. The former Winnipeg Jets defenseman gave a classic response when asked whether he is ready for October's alumni game, and it's a reminder of the man's personality.
Byfuglien, now 41, spent last weekend competing in the 2026 Kenora Bass International, a bass fishing tournament where he finished among the top 30 anglers.
During a weigh in interview, someone asked "Big Buff" if he was in game shape for Winnipeg's alumni tournament this October. He did not hesitate.
Never was in shape
A reluctant reunion
Byfuglien initially played coy about the event altogether, joking "What one?" when first asked, then claiming he did not know an alumni game existed.
Once the interviewer reminded him that Jets fans are expecting to see him, he softened, saying his family is excited to head back to Winnipeg for the occasion.
He has actually been on the preliminary alumni roster since January, when the Jets and Canadiens unveiled lineups for their Heritage Classic weekend.
What to expect in October
The alumni matchup is set for October 24 at Canada Life Centre, a night before the Jets and Canadiens play outdoors at Princess Auto Stadium.
Winnipeg's roster leans heavily on the 2018-19 era, featuring Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, Paul Stastny and Mathieu Perreault.
Byfuglien last suited up for the Jets that same season, finishing his 15-year career with 177 goals and 348 assists across 869 games.
Whether he is in playing shape or not, fans will just be happy to see him back on the ice.
