John Chayka makes his biggest move of the offseason, and the NHL is on notice

The Leafs acquired the 30-year-old defenseman from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick, locking him up on an eight-year contract worth roughly $8.5 million annually. It stands as Chayka's biggest move of the offseason so far.

Raddysh was coming off a breakout 2025-26 campaign, posting career highs across the board with 22 goals, 48 assists and 70 points in 73 games while playing alongside Tampa's high-powered attack.

Rather than let him test unrestricted free agency on July 1, Chayka moved decisively to secure the top blueliner available on the market.

Chayka explained that Toronto viewed Raddysh's rise as a steady progression rather than a fluke, pointing to consistent underlying improvements in his game.

He noted the team always builds contingency plans, but Raddysh represented their clear top choice given his skill set and Toronto roots.

The Leafs also value his right-handed shot as a weapon on the power play, something the roster lacked. Now, he can play alongside Morgan Rielly, who has been desperate for a right-side defensive partner of this caliber.

This move signals a front office unafraid to be aggressive. Toronto allowed the second-most goals per game in the league last season, and adding a proven two-way defenseman like Raddysh directly addresses that weakness.

It's interesting to see Chayka go into free agency guns blazing and with such confidence. There were some concerns about his history when he was first hired by the franchise. However, he seems eager to prove those detractors wrong.

Ultimately, it won't be easier for him to overcome some of the skepticism that surrounds his tenure. However, that doesn't mean he has to lie down and take it. Instead, he has an opportunity to become one of the best and boldest GMs in the NHL. A title he seems keen on earning.
