The Washington Capitals are reportedly eying some "aggressive" changes this summer after another disappointing 2nd round loss in the postseason and ahead of what could be Alex Ovechkin's last year in the NHL.
Speculation is heating up about the future of Washington Capitals captain and NHL all-time leading scorer Alex Ovechkin after an erroneous report was accidentally emailed to Capitals season ticket holders saying that 2025-26 would be his final year in the League.
While the Capitals quickly sent out a correction, recent comments from Ovechkin's wife seemed to confirm the initial report that the end could be near for him.
If 2025-26 is in fact the final NHL year for Ovechkin, they may try to be aggressive to maximize the chances of sending him off with a 2nd Stanley Cup win.
Speaking with Julian McKenzie on The Chris Johnston Show, TSN's Chris Johnston said he feels the Capitals will try and maximize what very well could be the final year in the NHL career of Alex Ovechkin.
This is probably the last kick at the can with Ovi, most likely, so I think that will inform their summer as well. I think you're going to see them be pretty aggressive and see what they can get done on the trade market.
The Capitals were aggressive last summer, sending goaltender Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois, a deal that worked out for both sides. They also traded Nick Jensen to the Ottawa Senators for Jakub Chychrun, and eventually re-signed him to a lengthy extension.
The Capitals have shown they're not shy about making bold moves, and if this is their last chance to win the Stanley Cup with Ovechkin still on their roster, don't be surprised to see even more bold moves on the horizon to give them the best chance for their first title since 2018.
