Tom Wilson's hit on Jack McBain was reviewed for a major, then cut to 2 minutes for interference.

That ruling is why this turned from one heavy collision into full-blown suspension talk.
This is where Wilson stories always split in two. One side sees a hard, emotional winger dragging a game back toward Washington's bench.
The other side sees a repeat lightning rod whose borderline hits never stay inside one night. That's the part the league office always has to weigh with him.
Spencer Carbery's club won 7-4 in Utah, and Wilson was right in the middle of the swing in emotion. The hit on McBain gave the Mammoth another power play, then the game kept boiling over.
That matters more than the box score. Wilson changes matchups, changes the bench mood, and sometimes changes the referee standard for the rest of the night.

Why this became a suspension story so fast

Wilson carries history into every review. The NHL suspended him 6 games in March 2024 for high-sticking Noah Gregor, so any major review tied to his name gets treated louder and longer.
That doesn't mean this hit automatically earns more. It means Wilson never gets a clean public reset when the clip starts flying.
For Washington, that's the strategic risk. Carbery wants the forecheck, the net-front edge, and the pushback Wilson brings, not the lineup hole that comes with a phone call from Player Safety.
For Utah, Andre Tourigny's group had every reason to react. Once the officials passed on a major, the temperature on that bench wasn't dropping.
That's why this play has legs past Friday. The argument isn't only about contact. It's about whether Tom Wilson still gets judged first by the hit, or by the history attached to it.
