Alex Ovechkin speaks about Russia's future participation in the Olympics
Today Russian hockey star and Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin spoke about his country's ban from the Olympics and his hopes for the future.
Russia has been banned from major sporting competitions for several years now. This stems from their involvement with the invasion of Ukraine as well as several doping scandals throughout the years. This afternoon Alex Ovechkin decided to address his thoughts on the ban and the future of Russia at the Olympics.
With the Paris Olympics underway, Alex Ovechkin was asked about his thoughts regarding the ban on Russia. He was asked if he would be willing to return to the Olympics or World Championships in the future.
In theory, yes, but you see what is happening with our team now. They are not allowing us to participate in the World Championships or the Olympics, so I don't know how this will all happen.
Athletes from Russia and Belarus are currently competing at the Olympics in Paris but not for their nations instead under the "AIN" umbrella as neutral athletes. With Alex Ovechkin nearing retirement the next Olympics would likely be the final time he could represent Russia. For now, though Alex Ovechkin is just enjoying what he can and playing for the love of the game.
Why do I need this, I have everything, I have enough of everything.' But after three to four days of suffering like that, you get into a routine and realize that you still love this business. If I didn't love it, I would have finished already.
If Russia does decide to end its invasion of Ukraine this could potentially open the door for Alex Ovechkin and Russia as a nation to re-enter the world stage of athletics. Currently, Alex Ovechkin has played in 17 games at the Olympics over 3 separate Olympics and tallied 11 points.
Until things are resolved between Russia and Ukraine Alex Ovechkin will have to continue showcasing his talents in the NHL for fans to appreciate his greatness. If he is unable to attend another Olympics it will be an absolute shame to lose out on one of the best players in the world at a tournament like that so many times.
