Vegas Golden Knights center Tomas Hertl may be in his final days with the team.
The rumor mill is churning. Management is actively shopping the veteran forward to clear cap space ahead of free agency.
Hertl carries a $6.75 million cap hit. That number is becoming tough to swallow for a cash-strapped roster.
The center recorded 24 goals and 58 points across 82 games this past season. Those are respectable offensive numbers.
But a massive minus-17 rating tells a different story about his two-way game. His defensive consistency simply vanished.
The 32-year-old is locked up through the 2029-30 campaign. Moving that contract requires serious maneuvering from the front office.
The Eastern Conference feels like the most realistic destination. Several contenders desperately need a veteran second-line presence.
Tomas Hertl's trade protection will be a roadblock for Vegas
Finding a willing trade partner means navigating a modified no-trade clause. Hertl ultimately controls his own destiny right now, with a 29-team no-trade list.
The locker room dynamics will undoubtedly shift if he leaves. His presence on the power play was a constant.
But this is a cutthroat business. The front office knows a heavy long-term contract severely limits roster flexibility.
Hertl has produced just six points in 12 playoff games. Vegas expects far more production from a top-six forward.
Expect trade discussions to accelerate rapidly before the NHL draft. General managers are already working the phones.
The clock is ticking loudly for the Golden Knights. A transaction feels completely inevitable at this stage.
