The Minnesota Wild made a pitch to steal Luke Hughes right out from under Sheldon Keefe last season.

Bill Guerin is an aggressive general manager, and he clearly wants to build a family dynasty in the State of Hockey.
After ambushing New Jersey to land Quinn Hughes, Guerin immediately targeted the youngest brother to sweeten the pot in St. Paul.
The ultimate goal was obvious to everyone around the league: acquire Luke immediately, and lay the groundwork to sign superstar forward Jack Hughes when he hits the open market in 2030.
Former Devils executive Tom Fitzgerald slammed the door shut on that ambitious mid-season proposal.
But Fitzgerald is out, and Sunny Mehta is now calling the shots for a team desperately seeking a new identity.
Mehta inherited a heavily flawed roster that posted a brutal -16 goal differential, meaning every single asset is currently being evaluated.
Logging over 21 minutes of ice time nightly, the youngest Hughes remains a foundational piece on the New Jersey blue line.
Over his NHL career, he has routinely frustrated opponents with his high-end transition game and elite controlled entries.
Minnesota desperately needs that exact type of reliable offensive output and crisp passing to push them over the top.

Minnesota Wild pulling out all the stops to keep Quinn Hughes

The Wild are incredibly determined, and Guerin will undoubtedly revisit this monumental conversation during the upcoming summer months.
Quinn is eligible for a massive contract extension on July 1st, and bringing his brother aboard guarantees he stays permanently.
But the Devils hold all the leverage in these negotiations.
Luke is locked into his massive contract through 2031, so the asking price will require gutting the Minnesota prospect pool significantly.
