The Vancouver Canucks shockingly traded their captain on Friday, and now they've revealed their plans for the future following the blockbuster trade.
After months of speculation surrounding captain Quinn Hughes, the Vancouver Canucks shocked the NHL world on Friday night, dealing him to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for three young players and a first-round draft pick.
The deal followed months and months of talk surrounding the New Jersey Devils, and while the Canucks may have gotten a better offer elsewhere, they believe they potential of Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren was enough to give up their superstar blue liner.
Patrik Allvin addresses the future in Vancouver
Now, this has many people questioning what the future holds for the Canucks, something that General Manager Patrik Allvin addressed following the blockbuster trade.
Unlike last year when they acquired a pick in the J.T. Miller trade and then used it to land Drew O'Connor and Marcus Pettersson, Allvin reveals that the team are intent on using Minnesota's selection at the 2026 NHL Draft.
On top of that, he confirms that they are rebuilding or retooling, and will continue to look for players under 25 that can play at the NHL level, signalling that the likes of Kiefer Sherwood may be used to acquire such players.
This comes as no surprise to Canucks fans, as they have been wanting the team to look to the future for much of the 2025/26 season thus far, and with the team potentially in the running for a top-five pick in the draft, this pivot is clearly the right move for the future of the organization.
