Vancouver Canucks have just hit a new low after latest report from doctor

Byrne, a longtime NHL sleep consultant, laid out his concerns this week on Sekeres and Price, pointing at British Columbia's switch to permanent daylight saving time.

His warning has been picked up as another blow to a rebuilding roster.

British Columbia locked itself at UTC-7 on March 8 and will not fall back in November, while the rest of the league does.

From November to mid-March, that puts Vancouver two hours behind Eastern teams instead of the usual three.

Fewer time zones to cross means less circadian adjustment, so the dreaded eastern swings ask the body to move one hour, not two or three. That is the direction of travel players struggle with most, and it shrinks for two-thirds of the season.

Byrne's real point is not severity but whiplash. The roster spends part of the year on the old three-hour relationship and the rest on the new two-hour one, so it never settles into a single rhythm.

The overlooked cost sits closer to home. For five months, Vancouver sits an hour ahead of its nearest Pacific Division rivals, since Seattle, Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Jose and Vegas all fall back in November while the Canucks do not.

That means a short trip down the coast now carries a clock change that never existed before, and home starts shift to fit national windows built around a different offset.

Head coach Manny Malhotra inherits a young group that thrives on routine, and routine is exactly what the transition scrambles.

None of that is a curse. It is a five-month artifact that resets when the United States springs forward on March 14.
