McDavid to Philadelphia is everywhere today. The rumor says little about McDavid and almost everything about Matvei Michkov.

The chatter traces back to former Flyer Todd Fedoruk, who claimed on air that McDavid wants to play in Philadelphia. Aggregators turned one ex-player's hunch into a fully priced trade board within hours.
The going rate being floated starts with Michkov and multiple first-round picks.
Philadelphia would sooner build around Tyson Foerster, Jett Luchanko and Oliver Bonk than surrender Michkov.
Here is the problem. Edmonton could trade him tomorrow - teams move signed stars constantly - but McDavid is locked in through 2027-28, and nothing suggests he has asked out.
A rival openly courting a signed player is the part that draws tampering scrutiny, not the trade itself. So the deal everyone is pricing has no seller and no request behind it - only a return to argue about.

Why this rumor is really about Michkov

Rewind fourteen months. Michkov scored 26 goals as a rookie and looked untouchable in Philadelphia.
Then came a sophomore slump, a conditioning callout from Rick Tocchet, and a playoff healthy scratch. By May, insiders reported the Flyers would "listen on everyone" regarding him.
His scoring slipped to 51 points, and he managed one assist across eight playoff games.
A player Danny Briere was quietly fielding discount offers on cannot also be the centerpiece Edmonton demands for the best player alive.
Both things cannot be true at once.

The value reset nobody else flagged

That contradiction is the point.
Being named as McDavid's asking price quietly relaunders Michkov from benched problem into franchise cornerstone.
Whether or not a McDavid deal is real, the rumor does free public-relations work for Philadelphia's most divisive asset. Briere gets to reset a 21-year-old's trade value without saying a word.
