One of the league's top defenseman no longer wants to be traded: This is not a win for Vancouver

Filip Hronek has no interest in leaving Vancouver.
That sounds like good news - until you consider what he's actually choosing to stay with.
David Pagnotta reported on Sekeres & Price that the Czech defenseman has made it clear to the Canucks he has no interest in going anywhere.

Hronek is one of their best defensemen, and keeping him removes one headache from a summer full of them.
But the more honest read is a little different. Vancouver finished 2025-26 at 25-49-8, fired head coach Adam Foote, and named Manny Malhotra as a new head coach under new GM Ryan Johnson.
Hronek isn't staying because the franchise gave him a compelling reason to believe in where it's going.
He's staying because he signed an 8-year, $58 million contract in June 2024, and at a $7.25 million cap hit through 2031-32, the market of teams willing to absorb that commitment is naturally limited.
That's not cynicism - it's just math. When a player on a long-term deal decides not to push for a trade, context always matters.
What his numbers say about his real value
Hronek played all 82 games in 2025-26 and put up 8 goals, 41 assists, and 49 points. That is legitimate top-four production, and Ryan Johnson would be building around worse if he let it walk.
Nobody should dismiss what Hronek brings to a blue line. The point is that him staying doesn't answer any of the bigger questions surrounding this team.
The rebuild still needs a foundation
Vancouver still needs a clear system identity, and a supporting cast that can justify Hronek's place in the lineup.
One defenseman choosing to stay gives Johnson one fewer problem - not a plan.
The quiet story here isn't that a trade option is off the table. It's that the Canucks still have to build something worth Hronek's long-term commitment.
