Vancouver Canucks fans finally have a reason for optimism after months of uncertainty surrounding goaltender Thatcher Demko's health.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman delivered a positive update during a recent appearance on NHL Network, revealing that Demko has resumed skating and training this summer.
I have heard from people who have seen it that he is skating. I have heard that he's been working out.
Friedman noted there is hope that whatever issue the Canucks have been managing physically has finally been resolved, though he stopped short of putting a firm timeline on Demko's return to game action.
A Recurring Challenge in Vancouver
Demko's injury troubles are not new territory for the Canucks. The 30-year-old has appeared in just 43 games combined over the last two seasons, a stretch that included a knee injury and a hip issue that eventually required surgery.
Former general manager Patrik Allvin had targeted training camp as a realistic return point when the procedure was first performed, but that timeline has since become murkier.
The lack of availability has forced Vancouver to continually adjust in net.
The club signed Kevin Lankinen to a five-year, $4.5 million annual extension, and Arturs Silovs is expected to be ready for a larger NHL role, giving the Canucks options regardless of when Demko returns.
Managing Expectations Entering Camp
Skating and offseason training do not guarantee Demko will be ready for opening night, but they represent meaningful progress after a difficult stretch.
With his recent history, Vancouver appears intent on avoiding any rush back, prioritizing full health over an early return date as camp approaches.
