As a result of overplaying their netminder in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks might face some long-term consequences of it, possibly becoming an ongoing problem. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, who had the update on Tuesday, number one goalie for the Canucks, Thatcher Demko, is still nursing an injury he sustained from that demanding playoff workload. Friedman said surgery isn't an option for him, and he'll look to live with the problem.
To add to the uncertainty, there's now a question mark around Thatcher Demko's availability for the start of the upcoming season. That said, Elliotte Friedman then suggested his recovery timeline might be uncertain, but he isn't expected to miss a big chunk of the season.
Even more concerning is that this injury might have been aggravated by putting Thatcher Demko in too soon. If that's the case, then that decision may end up coming back to haunt the Canucks for a long time.
