Toronto Maple Leafs left waiting as dream coaching target refuses to rush decision

David Carle is the head coach Toronto wants, and the Maple Leafs are waiting for his answer.
That is the story inside Toronto's coaching search as of today.
This is not a normal chase where the NHL team holds all the leverage.
Carle has Denver, security, a winning setup, and no reason to sprint into the loudest bench in hockey.
Toronto finished 32-36-14 with 78 points, which is why this search carries more weight than a routine hire.
The Maple Leafs also closed with a 2-7-1 stretch, so the next voice behind the bench has to reset more than line matching.
Carle has the leverage here
Elliotte Friedman's update hit because it flipped the usual power dynamic.
"Carle, they're working through that. I think they're interested in him a lot and everyone is trying to gauge what the possibility is. I do think though that Toronto wants to make Carle at least think of them and give him a reason but as of this morning, nothing I hear is imminent."

The post frames Toronto's push around patience, not control, and that matters.
Carle is not being sold a rebuild with no heat.
He would be walking into a market that allowed 299 goals and finished with a -46 goal differential.
That means Toronto's pitch has to be bigger than money or title.
It has to convince Carle that the roster can be coached his way, not just patched for another short run.
That is where the wait becomes dangerous.
Every extra day gives Carle more control over the terms, the staff, the message, and the comfort level.
For Toronto, the risk is simple.
When a coach makes the Maple Leafs wait, he is not chasing the job. He is deciding whether the job is worth the noise.
