The Maple Leafs have taken a step back in 2025/26, and given their lack of depth and prospects coming through, Craig Button declares their window closed.
The past 18 months have been full of change for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but despite entering the 2025/26 regular season full of optimism, things aren't going the way that they would have hoped.
As of right now, this is a team on the outside looking in at a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot, and with few prospects coming through and limited assets, the future certainly doesn't look too bright.
Craig Button declares Toronto's window closed
While they've not made an Eastern Conference Finals with this core group, Toronto have been seen as genuine contenders in recent years, but according to TSN's Craig Button, that is now over.
This team's window for contending: Over. Done. Finished. As Dandy Don Meredith, who used to be on Monday Night Football, said: This party is over.
Sure, this is still a team with Auston Matthews, William Nylander and John Tavares leading the way, but with little talent on the blue line and major question marks in net given their injuries and inconsistencies, it's easy to see why Button arrived at this conclusion.
In 2025/26, the Maple Leafs sit eight points out of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, and if they fail to make the post-season, don't be shocked to see more changes coming this summer.
Ultimately, with Brad Treliving at the helm, things have only gone downhill for Toronto, and while they could shock the world with some big signings that turn things around, as of right now, Button and most of the NHL world see the Maple Leafs future as bleak at best.
