NHL insiders now have head coach Peter Laviolette circling Toronto, and the fit is about control, not noise.
The Leafs already made the first hard move. Craig Berube is out, John Chayka is in charge, and the next bench hire has to change the room fast.
Laviolette's answer to Nick Alberga was short:
"Going hard, playing hard, time & space."

Toronto's 32-36-14 season didn't just miss the standard. It exposed a team that lost its grip when the schedule got tight.
Matthews finished with 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games. That's not enough insulation for a roster built around his top-six pull.
Laviolette gives Toronto a harder edge
The Leafs don't need a soft reset. They need a coach who can walk into that locker room and make ice time feel earned again.
Laviolette's best selling point is structure with teeth. His "time & space" line is really about taking away comfort, forcing quicker reads, and turning pressure into habit.
That also fits Chayka's problem. Toronto can talk data, controlled entries, and shot quality all summer, but none of it matters if the bench standard slips.
Matthews went minus-4, and the optics around his finish only add pressure. A new coach has to pull more out of him without making the room feel like a public trial.
This is why Laviolette feels like more than another recycled name. He brings instant authority, a direct style, and enough NHL mileage to handle Toronto's daily heat.
The gamble is blunt. If the Leafs hire him, the stars lose excuses before puck drop next season.
