Patrick Roy is the loudest name around head coach Craig Berube's old Maple Leafs bench, and Toronto can't treat that as nostalgia.

This is the kind of name that changes the temperature of a coaching search before an interview even happens.
Roy is available after the New York Islanders moved on from him on April 5, replacing him with Peter DeBoer while chasing a playoff spot.
Toronto is now searching after Berube was fired following a 32-36-14 season, a -46 goal differential, and a seven-game slide to end the schedule.
Roy wouldn't be a neutral hire. He would be a statement hire.
The clip making the rounds puts the question in blunt terms: would Roy actually be the right man for this Leafs room?
The discussion lands because Roy's name still carries weight, but the real issue is whether his voice fits Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, and a market that eats hesitation alive.
"Would Patrick Roy be a good choice as coach of the Leafs?"

Patrick Roy would force Toronto to pick an identity

Roy's case is simple. He brings edge, presence, and a bench personality that would instantly cut through the noise.
The risk is just as clear. Toronto doesn't need theatre. It needs structure, defensive habits, and a coach who can make a skilled roster play harder without turning every week into a referendum.
Manny Malhotra would represent the cleaner modern pivot. Kris Knoblauch, now out in Edmonton, brings a different résumé and would also draw attention.
But Roy is the fascinating swing because he would force John Chayka to answer the bigger question first.
Are the Maple Leafs trying to calm the room, or jolt it?
If Chayka wants a controlled reset, Roy may be too hot a match. If he wants pressure, accountability, and a louder standard from day one, Roy belongs in the conversation.
That's the real story here. Not whether Roy is famous enough for Toronto.
Whether Toronto is ready for everything that comes with him.
