There's no doubt that Mitch Marner is one of the elite scorers in the game, which is exactly why it has been predicted by expert Jon Steitzer that he will demand a salary simply too high for the Maple Leafs to fit under their cap, likely leading GM Brad Treliving to execute a trade.
Marner is entering the final year of his contract, one that will see him paid $10.9 million. Even without a raise, it is going to be very hard for the Leafs to retain him on that type of salary. Treliving likely won't want to risk losing Marner in free agency for nothing, therefore should talks stall and no progress is made, a trade may be the only option, and boy has there been a ton of trade talk surrounding Marner so far this off-season.
Leafs fans sure hope they will continue to see more goal celebrations by Marner next season, but based on recent remarks by experts and the Leafs cap situation, it is starting to seem more and more unlikely.
