Matthew Knies inked a long-term deal in Toronto this summer, and now he's opened up on his massive role and responsibility for the team and the city.
The past few months in Toronto have been full of drama, most, if not all of it involving Mitch Marner and his comments, with many seeing him as a player and a person that couldn't deal with the spotlight in the biggest hockey market in the world.
Now, he's departed, and while many are looking for outside sources to replace the 100-point pace Marner put up last season, perhaps, it could come from within in one of his former linemates.
Matthew Knies Believes Bigger Role in Toronto Will 'Make Him Better'
In an interview with The Athletic, rising star Matthew Knies opened up on his expanding role in Toronto, making the bold statement that he's ready for a bigger opportunity and the spotlight that comes with it.
"I want that feeling that I'm playing for the whole city. I don't really look at it as something that can tear me down. It's something that is going to make me better.
I have to perform better and take on a little bit more ice time or take on a bigger role. If that's what's needed and expected, then you know I'm going to be ready for it and hopefully successful in those areas."

Unsurprisingly, his comments had Maple Leafs fans on social media fired up, as fans have been begging for someone to step up and help lead this team alongside William Nylander, John Tavares and captain Auston Matthews.
Sure, Marner was productive, but his recent comments show that he was never quite the leader this team had hoped for, but if Knies can take the jump that fans are hoping for, this is a team that could perform well beyond expectations in 2025/26.
