The Toronto Maple Leafs have added veteran centre Vinni Lettieri to their roster.
Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reports the 31-year-old was recalled from the Toronto Marlies on Sunday, giving the Leafs another forward option while the lineup deals with injuries.
Why Lettieri Gets the Call Now
The timing stands out. John Tavares is week to week with a lower-body injury, which leaves Toronto thinner down the middle. Toronto turned to a player who has produced at the AHL level for well over a year.
Lettieri has started this season on fire with the Marlies, posting three goals and six assists across his first five regular-season games.
That follows a spring in which he led all AHL players in postseason scoring, collecting 11 goals and 26 points in 23 games on the way to the 2026 Calder Cup.
He also scored the series-clinching goal in the Final against Chicago. Last season he added 14 goals and 42 points in 55 regular-season games for the Marlies.
What Leafs Fans Should Expect
Lettieri is not new to the NHL, but his big-league résumé is modest. He owns 15 goals and 32 points in 155 career games across stops with the Rangers, Ducks, Bruins and Wild. He has not appeared in a regular-season NHL game since 2024-25, when he skated in 26 contests for Boston.
The Excelsior, Minnesota native re-signed with Toronto in July on a one-year deal, even with some expectation he might head to Europe. Now the patience on both sides is paying off with a shot at the highest level.
Expect a depth role at first. The Leafs have been searching for answers in their bottom six and for more ability to finish chances, and Lettieri offers experience, a proven scoring touch in the AHL and a track record of delivering in big moments.
Whether he draws into the lineup right away remains to be seen, but a player who earned this opportunity through production deserves a real look. Every bit of help counts for a team still searching for traction.
