Evgeny Kuznetsov suffering family tragedy after the death of his father

Hockey News Hub's Jeremy Garrett shared condolences to the Kuznetsov family after the news surfaced, and Complete Hockey News also relayed the report. No cause of death has been made public, and neither Kuznetsov nor his representatives have commented publicly.

The loss comes only weeks after Kuznetsov stepped away from the KHL's Sibir Novosibirsk. On October 3, the 34-year-old and the club agreed to a mutual contract termination after just eight games this season.

His agent said the move came at the player's request because of family circumstances. It has not been confirmed whether that situation is connected to this news.

Tragedy is not new for the Chelyabinsk native. A documentary filmed in 2005 showed his family coping with the death of his older brother roughly a year earlier, and it portrayed a young Kuznetsov channeling that grief into his hockey.

His father also played the game, and the bond between them has been a theme throughout his career. When the two reunited in Los Angeles for the Capitals' fathers' trip in 2015, Kuznetsov was eager to show his dad what hockey in North America truly looked like.

Washington selected Kuznetsov 26th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, and he grew into a core piece of the franchise, helping the Capitals capture the Stanley Cup in 2018.

He wrapped up his NHL career in 2023-24 after a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes, where he added six points in 10 playoff games.

Since returning to Russia in 2024, he has bounced between several KHL clubs, and he is currently without a team.

Fans across the hockey community are expected to rally around Kuznetsov during this difficult time. We extend our sincere condolences to Evgeny and his family.
