Surprising Montreal Canadiens player reportedly named in trade talks

Alex Newhook may not be on the move, but the Montreal Canadiens forward could still find himself in the rumor mill. Insider David Pagnotta says the 25-year-old's name is likely to come up as other clubs probe the market.
You might hear Alex Newhook's name pop up every now and again depending on what they end up doing; I don't think it's their desire to make anything happen in that regard, but other teams are gonna ask about certain players
Pagnotta was clear that Montreal is not the one driving the conversation. The comment points to curiosity from other organizations rather than any push from the Canadiens to shake up their forward group.
Why Other Teams Will Come Calling
The reason is simple. Newhook has become one of the more appealing forwards on Montreal's roster.
Last season he scored 13 goals and 25 points in only 42 regular season games, then added seven goals and 10 points over 19 playoff games.
That kind of production, paired with his age, naturally draws attention from rival general managers.
His contract adds to the appeal. Newhook recently signed a four-year extension carrying a $5.55 million cap hit, which keeps him under team control through the 2030-31 season.
At 25, he also sits squarely in his prime. A reasonably priced forward with proven playoff production is exactly the type of player teams ask about.
What It Means for Montreal
That is standard practice around the league. The Canadiens have been connected to some of the biggest names on the trade market, including Dylan Larkin, and any team negotiating with Montreal is likely to ask about established NHL forwards before anything else.
Teams chasing help up front want to see what Montreal might part with, even when the answer is nothing.
For now, Newhook remains a core piece in Montreal, and nothing suggests the Canadiens are looking to move him. Still, with trade chatter ramping up around the league, fans should expect his name to surface every so often.
