Leon Draisaitl appeared to shove Mattias Ekholm on the Oilers bench during a 5-0 lead over Utah on Saturday, and the cause is still unknown.
Leon Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm had a tense moment on the Edmonton Oilers bench Saturday night, and the cameras caught all of it.
Draisaitl appeared to shove Ekholm during a heated back and forth while the Oilers were dominating the Utah Mammoth.
The timing is what makes it so strange.
Edmonton already led 5-0 when the clip was filmed, and the Oilers went on to win 6-2 in Salt Lake City, bouncing back from a 4-2 loss to the same team on Thursday.
Nobody has said what set it off.
What the clip shows
Draisaitl looks visibly irritated, turning toward Ekholm at close range and shoves him while walking past.
The body language did not look friendly.
There has been no confirmed explanation from either player, so anything about the cause is a guess for now.
Coach Mike Babcock now has an awkward bit of film on his hands, even if it turns out to be nothing.
These are two of the most important voices in the Edmonton room, one driving the offense and the other steadying the blue line.
Why it may not be a big deal
Bench disagreements happen all the time in the NHL, and there is no sign of a deeper problem.
Ekholm even helped create the 5-0 goal when he broke up a Utah entry and McDavid poked it free to Draisaitl on a breakaway.
Two days earlier, Ekholm charged into the scrum to defend Draisaitl after a hit from behind by Utah's Jack McBain.
Edmonton is 6-1-1, and Connor McDavid has points in all eight games, including a five-point night on Saturday.
The Oilers open a five-game homestand Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild at Rogers Place, so the next look at the two together comes quickly, and fans will be watching.
