Jake McCabe is furious, and head coach Craig Berube has a monumental hole to fill in his lineup after a devastating injury.

The Department of Player Safety dropped the hammer on Radko Gudas on Saturday, handing him a five-game suspension.
But inside the locker room, that punishment feels like an absolute slap on the wrist.
Gudas effectively ended the season for a core leader on the roster, leaving a glaring void down the stretch that will severely test their depth.
McCabe did not hold back his disgust when asked about the league's highly controversial ruling.
You lose a guy for the rest of the year, your leader, and a guy gets five games

He rightly pointed out that Gudas has a well-documented history of crossing the line on the ice, making this outcome even more infuriating.

Frustration Boils Over in Toronto

It is a bitter pill to swallow for a team fighting tooth and nail for ideal playoff positioning.
The frustration stems directly from the perceived lack of accountability from George Parros and his disciplinary committee.
McCabe captured the collective exhaustion of NHL players dealing with inconsistent rulings, hinting that the current system is fundamentally broken.
I can sit here and say whatever, but it's not going to change it. I'm not George sitting in the chair making the phone call and making those decisions, so it doesn't matter what the hell I say.
That unfiltered quote alone speaks volumes about the current state of trust between the players and the league office in New York.
Losing a star player for a massive chunk of the schedule while the offender sits for just a handful of nights is simply tough math to justify.
The blue line will have to rally immediately, but the sting of this decision will undoubtedly linger for weeks.
