Kirill Marchenko did not leave the Toronto Maple Leafs guessing about his price. According to Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, the winger presented two clear paths, and the club went with the bigger, longer commitment.
Friedman explained how the final days played out:
They got the extension verbally done on Monday but it wasn't signed until Tuesday. [...] The Leafs were told they had two choices; 5x12M$ or 6x12.5M$ and they chose the 6x12.5 option
What the Two Options Really Meant
The math tells the story. Five years at $12 million adds up to $60 million in total salary. Six years at $12.5 million lifts that to $75 million.
Toronto paid an extra $500,000 on the yearly cap hit and gained a full additional season of control over a scorer in his prime.
For Marchenko, the longer path offers security deep into his early 30s. For the Leafs, it is a bet that his production holds up as the salary cap continues to climb.
A higher number now can look smaller later if the ceiling keeps rising, which is how front offices often justify paying for term.
Why Toronto Chose Length Over Savings
Choosing the six-year deal suggests the Leafs value stability on a roster that has changed a lot this fall.
Marchenko arrived through the Matthew Knies trade, and locking him up quickly signals he is a centerpiece rather than a rental.
There is risk, of course. The extra year runs through ages when many wingers start to slow, and $12.5 million leaves little cushion for mistakes.
Still, the verbal agreement on Monday and the signature on Tuesday show both sides wanted this finished without drama.
Fans now wait to see whether Marchenko can justify the price tag in blue and white. A player who commands that kind of money will be judged on every shift, and the Leafs have made it clear he is the player they want to build around. That pressure comes with the territory, and Toronto will be watching closely to see how he handles it.
