Nikita Kucherov and the Tampa Bay Lightning may have passed the point of no return, at least according to NHL insider Chris Johnston.

Johnston does not see a path to patching things up between the franchise cornerstone and the organization that has built around him for over a decade. Asked about a possible reconciliation, he was blunt.
I could eat my words on this one, but I really don't believe there's any going back here, I don't there's any way to get the toothpaste back in the tube; I just think this has gone too far

How the Standoff Reached This Point

The rift became public on October 30, when reports surfaced that Kucherov had told the club he would not sign an extension and wanted to be moved.
Tampa Bay quickly pushed back, with general manager Julien BriseBois stating the team has no intention of trading him.
Kucherov has since said the issue comes down to poor communication and respect. On the financial side, Johnston reported the star winger is seeking roughly $20 million per season on a six-year deal. That would more than double his current $9.5 million cap hit.

What Comes Next for Tampa Bay

The gap between the two sides leaves the Lightning in a tricky position. Johnston has also said the sense around the league is that the club meant what it said about keeping him, so a quick trade is far from guaranteed.
Head coach Jon Cooper has maintained Kucherov is fully part of the team, and the winger plans to keep playing while the situation plays out.
For a franchise that watched Kucherov pass Steven Stamkos as its career points leader, a permanent split is jarring.
Kucherov is the reigning MVP and remains central to everything the Lightning do, which only raises the stakes of this standoff. If Johnston's read is right, the question is no longer whether the relationship can be saved, but how this chapter ends and which team lands one of the league's most dangerous scorers.
