Shane Wright's trade interest comes with one major complication

Josh Yohe of The Athletic reported that Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas is intrigued by the Seattle Kraken center. Yohe added that Seattle's asking price is substantial, and possibly more than Pittsburgh is willing to pay.

That gap usually gets explained by Wright's production dip. The sharper explanation is sitting inside the Penguins front office.

Ron Francis rejoined Pittsburgh on June 19 as special advisor, hockey operations. He drafted Wright fourth overall in 2022 and ran Seattle's hockey department through April 2026, first as general manager and then as president.

Teams overpay when they believe they see something the seller has missed. Pittsburgh cannot make that claim here.

Its most informed voice on Wright watched the entire curve, from Kingston to a third-line role last season.

Wright put up 44 points in 79 games in 2024-25 on 91 shots, a 20.9 percent conversion rate. Last season he took 97 shots and produced 27 points in 74 games.

Shot volume rose. The shooting percentage fell to 12.4, and the points went with it.

Kraken general manager Jason Botterill can price the 44-point season in good faith. Francis can tell Dubas what was underneath it.

Wright carries an $886,000 cap hit in the final season of his entry-level contract before restricted free agency in 2027. That is one year of cheap control, not a settled top-six center.

The Stanley Cup window in Pittsburgh is tied to Sidney Crosby's age-39 season.

Dubas is not paying a premium for a player his own advisor already spent four years evaluating.
