Shane Wright makes perfect sense for one Original Six team, but Seattle may not sell low

The Boston Bruins keep popping up in Shane Wright chatter, and it's easy to see why.

Wright is stuck on Seattle's third line making just $887K against the cap this season, a bargain for any team hunting a young center with top six upside.

Boston fits that description perfectly after spending the summer searching for a true number one pivot and coming up short at nearly every turn.

But here's where it gets tricky fast.

The gap between what Wright makes and what Boston would likely need to send back in return is enormous, and that math matters a lot in Seattle.

Casey Mittelstadt is making $5.75M this season, more than six times Wright's cap hit.

A straight swap looks lopsided on paper, and that's before factoring in draft capital at all.

One recent trade simulation had Boston sending Wright and a 2027 fifth round pick to Seattle for Mittelstadt and a 2028 second rounder, a deal mostly built to shed Boston's cap number rather than fairly value Wright.

The problem is Seattle doesn't need cap relief nearly as badly as it needs a real return for a former fourth overall pick.

If the Bruins want Kraken GM Jason Botterill to actually say yes, they will probably need to sweeten the pot with a legitimate prospect or an extra pick, not just a rental winger on an expiring deal.

Wright is 22, still on his entry level contract through 2026-27, and becomes a restricted free agent next summer, exactly the kind of controllable asset teams don't give away for a one year rental at $5.75M.

Don't be shocked if this rumor drags all the way into training camp before anything real actually takes shape.
