Last season, the New Jersey Devils made the blockbuster move to land Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks, and while it hasn't panned out perfectly, the trade conditions have now become official. Due to being eliminated from the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 2024 draft pick that New Jersey sent to San Jose will not convey into a first, and will instead be the team's second-round pick in the upcoming draft.
Given the Sharks rebuilding situation, no one can blame them for expecting the Devils to go deep in the playoffs this year in the hopes of getting their first round pick, but with a second of their own alongside New Jersey's and their potential first overall pick, the 2024 draft could be huge for the future of this franchise. As for the Devils, they will be disappointed with their play this season, but if they can use their first-round pick in another trade this summer or pick up a talented young player for the future, it will help them in a big way.
Regardless, this deal has to be seen as a win for the Sharks, who already landed Quentin Musty with the Devils first-round pick in 2023, and with another big draft coming up, this trade may define their current rebuild in the best way possible.
