Bryan Rust laid a brutal hit on Brock Boeser late in Sunday's game, and now, the NHL's Department of Player Safety are set to get involved.
The Vancouver Canucks took on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night, and while the game saw the home team drop yet another matchup, it didn't come without immense drama.
Late in the game, the Penguins were leading 3-2, with the team looking to hold on to their lead as Pittsburgh look to hold on to their Wild Card hopes in the very tight Eastern Conference playoff race.
Rust to face consequences for latest hit
While the Penguins managed to keep the Canucks out, it didn't come without a bad play or two, as Bryan Rust took down Brock Boeser from behind with what seemed like an elbow to the back of the head, with the Canucks forward struggling to get up for several seconds.
While it didn't appear to be the worst hit at full speed, when slowed down, Rust clearly got his elbow up towards the head of Boeser, and it's a move that's reportedly going to draw attention from the NHL's Department of Player Safety, according to Rick Dhaliwal.
Rust hasn't been a player that has drawn attention from the NHL's DoPS on a consistent basis throughout his career, but on this play, it was clear that he got his elbows up in an attempt to hit Boeser from behind.
Ultimately, it's unclear what the punishment for Rust will be, whether that's a fine or a suspension, but if the league is looking to continue protecting their players, it's likely that they'll come down hard on the Penguins veteran here.
