Longtime Pittsburgh Penguins insider reveals unfortunate cancer diagnosis

Veteran Penguins analyst and insider Dave Molinari says he was diagnosed with lung cancer this summer after months of tests and a hospital stay for pneumonia.
Dave Molinari, who has covered the Pittsburgh Penguins for more than four decades, revealed this week that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The longtime hockey writer shared the news in a personal Substack post, explaining that a summer full of medical appointments led to a life changing result.
Instead of a typical vacation, Molinari spent much of the summer visiting doctors and clinics for bloodwork, including two days in the hospital in mid July after a suspected case of pneumonia did not fully clear.
A pulmonologist then took over his case and mapped out a plan to find answers.
Bronchoscopy revealed the diagnosis
That plan led to a bronchoscopy, a test that allowed doctors to examine his lungs and collect samples.
Molinari says he had asked about the odds of cancer given some family history and was told it applied to only a small percentage of similar cases.
The results told a different story. A biopsy showed what he believes, based on his own reading of the report, is a moderately differentiated form of lung cancer called pulmonary adenocarcinoma.
What comes next for his Penguins coverage
Molinari says he will soon meet with an oncologist, who will build a treatment plan following a PET scan.
He expects the severity of that treatment to affect his Penguins coverage early in the season, and doesn't anticipate spending much time at training camp.
He is also waiting on an unrelated procedure that had to be postponed earlier this year because of the uncertainty around his lung issues.
The longtime reporter said he plans to keep sharing updates as things develop.
