The Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup hopes remain alive but reports of Evgeni Malkin’s future beyond this season continue to roll in and a new contender has emerged to sign him.
Evgeni Malkin’s future with the Pittsburgh Penguins beyond this season remains unknown as he has not signed an extension.
Malkin has made it known he would like to return and play with the Penguins next season and many believe he will continue his NHL career regardless.
With no extension signed, speculation is beginning to mount regarding Malkin’s future and where he could play beyond Pittsburgh.
Today, Malkin’s former teammate Tyler Kennedy suggested that the Penguins’ rival the Washington Capitals could be an option for Malkin.

In a new interview, Kennedy admitted that he believes Malkin will make his way to Washington to play with good friend Alex Ovechkin before they both retire.
I don’t know what he’s looking for price-wise, but I’m telling you right now, you can’t let Malkin walk. You know where he’s going to go, boys? He’s going to the Washington Capitals. He’s very close with Ovechkin. I think Ovechkin’s coming back, and if they don’t sign Malkin, who do you think his first call is going to be? He’s going to the Washington Capitals to play with Ovechkin in his last year.
While a return to Pittsburgh still remains the most likely outcome for Malkin the Penguins are starting to play a dangerous game.
They cannot afford to let Malkin get to free agency and open the door for him to join a rival like the Capitals.
Whenever the Penguins playoff run does come to an end, figuring out Malkin’s future has to be priority number one for GM Kyle Dubas.
As the summer approaches and the offseason begins we will bring all of the latest news and details on Malkin’s future in Pittsburgh and beyond.
