Hilary Duff's Madison Square Garden line about hockey games landed as a punchline. The hockey timeline underneath it is far more specific.
Duff opened the first of two sold-out MSG shows on August 5 by telling the crowd she used to come to a lot of hockey games in that building, then noted she was headlining it now.
Comrie was never the home team in that building
Comrie signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders on July 5, 2007. Duff and Comrie started dating the following month.
He led that 2007-08 Islanders team in scoring with 49 points.
The Islanders played their home games at Nassau Coliseum, not MSG.
The Islanders and Rangers are divisional rivals, so half of their meetings each year fall at the Garden. Every game Duff attended there during that stretch was a road game.
She was sitting in the visitors' section, in a building where the crowd was cheering against him.
Six NHL franchises, none of them in Manhattan
Over 13 seasons Comrie played for the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. He also spent the 2004-05 lockout with Färjestad BK in Sweden.
The Rangers never appear on that list. Ottawa reacquired him on February 20, 2009, alongside Chris Campoli, sending Dean McAmmond and a first-round pick to Long Island.
He returned to Edmonton for 2009-10, finished with Pittsburgh in 2010-11, and retired in early 2012 after a third hip surgery. He ended with 365 points in 589 NHL games.
Duff and Comrie married in August 2010 and divorced in 2016. The joke was never really about him.
It was about a building she only ever entered as a guest of the road team.
For two nights this August, it finally belonged to her.
