Anaheim's Cutter Gauthier trade plan comes with a hidden deadline

Everyone is treating Cutter Gauthier's next contract as a cap-space problem. The bigger constraint is a date on the calendar.

The Ducks have roughly $9 million in space after matching Leo Carlsson's five-year, $90 million offer sheet from Philadelphia.

Gauthier, coming off 41 goals and 69 points in 76 games, is the only significant name left unsigned.

The new CBA takes effect on September 16, 2026, and it changes what Anaheim is allowed to offer. Until then Pat Verbeek can sign Gauthier for eight years, and after that seven becomes the ceiling for a team re-signing its own player.

That eighth year is not a detail. It is the cheapest tool a general manager has for lowering an average annual value, because it spreads the same money across one more season.

The same date ends deferred salary and limits how heavily a deal can be front-loaded, with the lowest salary year required to sit near 71 percent of the highest.

Those are the exact structures teams use to make a $16 million number feel smaller.

Reports have Anaheim willing to attach a second-round pick to move a veteran contract such as Alex Killorn's or Chris Kreider's.

Every week spent shopping those deals burns clock on the term window.

If Verbeek clears six million in mid-September, he has bought space at the cost of the eighth year that would have made the space unnecessary. That is a trade nobody is pricing.

Gauthier cannot be offer sheeted and is not arbitration eligible, so he has almost no leverage. He also has no reason to rush, which is what makes the calendar the real opponent here.

The cheapest path for Anaheim is signing long first and clearing salary second.

Waiting does not save money here, it quietly raises the price.
