The Philadelphia Flyers are right in the hunt for a playoff spot in 2023-24, but yet they have officially made the surprising move to healthy scratch Captain Sean Couturier ahead of their Tuesday battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Sean Couturier calls out the Flyers for their decision
After rumours emerged that John Tortorella was considering benching the captain, Couturier himself confirmed the news early on Tuesday, and when he was asked about his thoughts on the move, he certainly didn't hold back.
Couturier: I've been putting in the work for a while. I've been struggling, but I've been working on my game, and it's frustrating the way I've been treated around here lately. But it is what it is.
Couturier has been with the Flyers organization since he was drafted No. 8 overall back in the 2011 NHL Draft, so he's certainly seen a lot with this team, but this was certainly a decision that no one saw coming. In 64 games this season, the 31-year old has tallied 11 goals and 36 in his first healthy season in four years, but given what we know about John Tortorella, he's not above benching anyone.
If the Flyers are to go deep in the playoffs, they'll need Couturier on the ice and firing, so hopefully after a game or two he can get back on the ice and lead this team like he was expected too when he was named the captain of the organization just 34 days ago. The team find themselves one point ahead of the Washington Capitals for the third playoff spot in the Metro Division, and with such a tight Wild Card race, they will be hoping that this move doesn't come back to bite them.
