Snubbed is the word many Flyers fans are using to describe Matvei Michkov not winning the Calder Trophy, as Canadiens' Lane Hutson took it home.
Unfortunately for them, Matvei Michkov didn't just lose out; he wasn't even a finalist, and that has stirred frustration among the Philadelphia faithful.
Wolf followed at 1,169, and Celebrini was just shy at 1,104. Michkov finished fourth, far adrift with 645 points, the lone non-finalist to even come remotely close.
Flyers fans are upset that
Michkov, their top rookie winger, didn't receive a spot in the top three. His play all season long was electric, and most figured he was deserving of consideration.
Michkov did not receive a single first place vote
The Professional Hockey Writers' Association, however, wasn't interested, giving him not a single first-place vote. His tally: 8 second-place, 26 third-place, 151 fourth-place, and 6 fifth-place votes.
Completing the top five was ex-Flyers prospect
Cutter Gauthier, who accrued 92 points and failed to receive a top-three vote.
Although Hutson posted a record-breaking campaign, Wolf came close to leading the Flames into the playoffs, and Celebrini impressed when available, but Michkov's exclusion hurts.
His scoring slump late in the season may have damaged his cause, yet many are of the opinion that he was unjustly omitted from what proved to be a highly competitive rookie class.
