The NHL season is off to a hot start, and in shocking fashion on Tuesday, two intriguing players have hit the waiver wire, including a top Senators prospect.
Early in the 2025/26 NHL season, we've seen plenty of action, upsets and incredible plays, but unfortunately, there's been some injuries as well that may end up hurting some teams.
That's what depth becomes even more important, and while trades are a good way to add depth, so is waivers, and on Tuesday, two very intriguing names were officially placed on waivers by their teams.
Two Young Players Placed on Waivers
The more shocking of the two is 23-year old
Donovan Sebrango, a former third-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings that has become a
top prospect for the Ottawa Senators.
Just last year, the blue liner tallied 8 goals and 20 points in 50 games played with the AHL's Belleville Senators, and while he's yet to take the leap to stardom or even a full-time role in the NHL, there's still potential there.
The other surprising name on the list is Egor Afanasyev, a talented winger from the San Jose Sharks who spent the 2024/25 campaign back in Russia before returning to the NHL this summer.
In that time, Afanasyev tallied 7 goals and 21 points in 53 games played, but given his talents, the hope was that he could rekindle his career in North America with the Sharks this season.
Ultimately though, both of these players could be intriguing pickups for teams looking to offer young names an opportunity in the NHL, and if either player gets claimed, it may end up being a major mistake for that team that let them go.
