The Senators have suffered a major setback, as goaltender Linus Ullmark has been placed on injured reserve, putting him on the sidelines for at least three games.
According to Ottawa Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch, Ullmark will be unavailable for at least a week, with the possibility of a longer absence depending on his recovery.
The injury occurred during Ottawa's 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, October 21.
Ullmark needed assistance leaving the ice in the third period after appearing to suffer a lower-body injury.
Samuel Ersson entered the game in relief.
The timing couldn't be much worse for Ottawa.
Why the timing really stings
Ullmark has been outstanding to begin the 2026-27 season, entering Wednesday's matchup with a 6-1-0 record, a 1.33 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage.
Under NHL injured-reserve rules, players must remain unavailable for at least seven days following the injury.
That means Ullmark is expected to miss Thursday's game against San Jose, Saturday's matchup with the New York Rangers and Tuesday's road game against Vegas.
His absence could extend beyond those three contests.
For now, the pressure shifts to Ersson, who will need to provide stability between the pipes while Ottawa navigates a demanding stretch of its schedule.
The Senators have enjoyed a strong start to the season, but losing their number-one goaltender creates an immediate challenge.
Ottawa cannot afford to let one injury derail its early momentum.
The biggest question is whether Ullmark's injury is relatively minor or something that could keep him sidelined considerably longer.
With a difficult Western Conference road trip approaching, Ottawa needs answers quickly.
