The Ottawa Senators placed their enforcer Zack MacEwen on waivers yesterday, and he has cleared and will report to their AHL affiliate team today.

The reason behind Zack MacEwen's absence from the Ottawa Senators' practice yesterday morning was unraveled when the team announced they waived MacEwen with the intention of sending him to their AHL affiliate, the Belleville Senators.

After clearing waivers today, he will report to Belleville, where he will continue the remainder of the season, pending any further call-ups.

MacEwen is no stranger to the AHL, having played the early days of his career with the Utica Comets of the Vancouver Canucks organization.

In 155 contests, he put up 37 goals and 96 points. Last year with Belleville, he recorded two goals and seven points in just 10 games.

Despite his AHL successes, MacEwen has mostly acted as a depth forward since joining Ottawa.

Since inking a three-year, $2.33 million contract with the Senators in 2023, he has scored four goals and six points over 49 NHL games with the team, averaging a meager 6:59 per game.

Although he passed through waivers unclaimed, MacEwen is still an interesting choice for clubs looking for a sparkplug.

On a league-minimum deal of $775,000, he's posted more than 150 hits in a season twice, bringing sandpaper and energy to a bottom-six role.

For now, however, Zack MacEwen will hope to make his mark with the Belleville Senators, positioning himself for a potential recall to Ottawa down the road.

If and when that recall does eventually happen, there's no doubt MacEwen will once again do everything he can to try and remain in the NHL.
