Maple Leafs add gritty defenseman on PTO who could make things interesting at training camp

Toronto has found itself another intriguing name to watch at camp.

The Maple Leafs have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Nick Blankenburg to a professional tryout, adding a body to a blue line that could use reinforcements while Chris Tanev works his way back from offseason core surgery.

Blankenburg spent last season split between the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche, putting together a career year with eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points across 61 games.

Despite that production, the 28-year-old never found a new contract in free agency, which is part of why he is walking into camp on a tryout basis rather than a guaranteed deal.

At 5-foot-9, Blankenburg is undersized by traditional standards, but he plays a mobile, puck moving style that new general manager John Chayka has clearly valued as he reshapes the roster.

With Tanev's timeline still uncertain, having another right shot option in the mix gives the Leafs some insurance if their top four needs a fill in early in the season.

A strong camp could turn this tryout into a real contract, especially once Toronto sorts out its cap situation.

The Leafs currently sit over the upper limit, though a Max Domi injury settlement could free up enough room to make a Blankenburg deal work before the regular season begins.
