MSG reportedly sent employees a fake Knicks championship ring email as a phishing test, and those who clicked got a mandatory cybersecurity class instead.

Madison Square Garden reportedly pulled a cruel one on its own staff, and it involves Knicks championship rings.
According to The Athletic, employees received an email at the end of September offering a free, personalized ring in one of two designs.
It was a phishing test.
Anyone who clicked the link never saw any jewelry.
Team sources told The Athletic those employees were sent to a mandatory cybersecurity class, tied to Dolan's growing cybersecurity concerns.

Why Rangers fans should care

The Rangers share the building with the Knicks and live under the same MSG umbrella.
Several Rangers players, including Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle, were in the building Tuesday when the Knicks raised their banner and received their rings.
Reports so far do not say whether Rangers staff were on the email list.
The Rangers have waited since 1994 for their own Stanley Cup, so they know what a parade does for New York.

Many longtime staffers are left out

The sting is that the rings are real.
The Knicks assistants were told theirs will come eventually, but many longtime Garden employees, including some on the Knicks business side, will not receive one at all.
Most NBA teams give rings to staff, even if they are less flashy than the ones the players wear.
It is a strange look for an organization still celebrating its first title in 53 years.
Dangling a ring in front of workers who may never see one, then sending them to a class instead, is going to sting in the hallways of the Garden.
Fair or not, MSG now has an awkward ring story to deal with.
