New York Islanders Unexpectedly Name Former NHLer General Manager
After a disappointing campaign in 2024/25, the New York Islanders swiftly moved on from veteran General Manager
Lou Lamoriello, and thus began a search for their new GM.
That search included people like Ken Holland and Marc Bergervin, but according to Pierre LeBrun, they've found their new General Manager in one of the most unexpected moves in recent NHL history.
LeBrun is now reporting that former NHLer Mathieu Darche, who retired after playing in 250 NHL games, the last of which came in 2011/12, will now be named the newest General Manager of the organization.
While many considered it just a matter of time until Darche would find his way into a different role in the front office, it was a shock to see him hired by the Islanders, with the team clearly trying to get younger as they hired the 48-year old for the role.
Now, it's likely that Brendan Shanahan, who was recently fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs will join him as the President of Hockey Operations, and while only time will tell whether or not this was the right move, with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, new blood in the front office and plenty of salary cap space, things are now looking up on Long Island.
