The New York Islanders disappointed again in 2024/25, and after struggling to find elite talent for years, they're officially moving on from Lou Lamoriello.
Lou Lamoriello has been a fixture in the New York Islanders front office as the General Manager for years now, and despite making the Eastern Conference Finals twice, this team has struggled mightily in recent years.
While he made the right move by trading
Brock Nelson at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, there have been many questions raised over Lamoriello's ability to build an NHL roster, and now, the Islanders have made a shock decision.
On Tuesday, the organization announced on social media that his contract will not be renewed, and instead, Operating Partner John Collins will begin the immediate search to find the next General Manager of the team.
With the likes of
Ilya Sorokin, Mat Barzal, Cal Ritchie and
Cole Eiserman, there's definitely some talent on this team, but given the way that this roster has been built over the past few years, there's no doubting that Lamoriello was past his best as a talent evaluator and a roster builder in the NHL.
For many Islanders fans, this move is a long-time coming, as Lamoriello has held them back with his insistence on making the post-season at all costs, and it's definitely led to a lack of young talent coming through the organization.
Ultimately, this could be the end for Lamoriello at the NHL level in any capacity, and while there was bad times, there's definitely been good times for the veteran General Manager as well, so now we will wait and see if he can find another role anytime soon.
